Thomas Garvey says the best roof for a home in Arcadia, Temple City, or anywhere in the San Gabriel Valley depends on the tastes of the homeowner, what they’re trying to achieve, and the location of their home.
Thomas has operated Garvey Roofing for over 35 years and uses the best roofing materials for the homes and commercial buildings he’s working on.
That doesn’t mean he goes with what’s in style or what’s hot on the market. He installs the roofing system that works in the best interest of the homeowner or building owner.
Garvey Roofing may install the tried-and-true plywood decking with the best underlayment, and top with tile or multi-dimensional shingles. A well-installed traditional roof can repel heat and create energy efficiency at the best possible cost.
In some cases, metal roofs are an excellent choice.

Metal roof installation
Metal roofs are lightweight and Thomas says he can remove about 7,000 pounds off a home.
“I like to put metal roofs on all the houses that I’ve done that are sitting up on case on, on the hillside. So they’re, they’re wind resistant and they’re lightweight. I like to remove weight off a home that’s sitting on sticks anyway.”
He says another reason to install a metal is because it just looks good and, adds Thomas, “It’s what I’m going to put on my house.”
Metal Roof Alert
Thomas also has a word of caution for homeowners who decide to install a metal roof. “It is the hardest roof in Southern California to put on correctly. It’s easy to do incorrectly, but it’s very, difficult to do correctly.”
A local roofing contractor must know how to “mitigate sound,” says Thomas, “and reduce the heat transfer. That’s my insulation license talking to you.”
Although Thomas will install metal roofs when the material makes sense he says that he generally doesn’t recommend them.
Other benefits of metal roofs include:
- Lifetime use: metal roofs will last from 50 to 70 years
- Resistance: wind resistance is key but it’s also effective against termites and other causes of wood rot
- Curb appeal: they have a pleasing look
Maintenance is usually lower compared to other types of roofing materials.
But, as Thomas says, metal roofs have to be installed properly. Otherwise, they can be noisy when it rains and transfer heat into the home during the summer.
Improper installation includes:

- Screws that are driven too tightly or too loose. If they’re used at the wrong angle then they can create gaps that lead to leaks.
- Moisture can be trapped by poor underlayment.
- Scratches on the protective coating can cause rust.
