Want a more energy efficient home so you can beat the heat out of your house this coming summer?
If you have an older roof, then upgrading can provide the energy savings you need.
Why?
Newer roofing materials are engineered better than ever to reflect the sun’s rays back into the atmosphere and that lowers your energy usage and utility bills.
Garvey Roofing installs and repairs all types of roofs—from historic bungalows in Pasadena to mid-century modern in Temple City and contemporary homes of all sizes in the San Gabriel Valley.

Your Roofing System
A quality roofing system begins with what we you don’t see like the decking and the underlayment.
Plywood may sound Old School but it remains an effective first barrier to prevent heat from transferring from the roof’s surface, into your attic, and into the rest of your house.
Underlayment is the next critical component.
Garvey Roofing uses Therma Sheet, a newer underlayment effective at reflecting the sun’s most harmful rays back into the atmosphere. It can be used with a variety of materials including metal roofs.
Today’s multidimensional asphalt shingles and tiles are manufactured with better UV coatings than in past decades. This means the sun is being reflected from first contact and deeper.
That’s the outside.
Move the air
Ventilation is an important part of your roofing system.
Low profile vents are used in place of the older, larger dormers used in the 1960s, 1950s and earlier.
Today’s vents let heat rise and escape from different points on the roof. In the case of wildfires, the low-profile vents are small enough and make it tough for embers to enter. The vents can also help dry out moisture in the winter.
Remember your attic
An attic fan can help beat the heat. A fan that kicks on automatically when the attic temperature reaches a setting like 99 or 100 degrees helps move the air in the summer.
Attic insulation is another barrier that keeps the hot air from seeping into your home.
Garvey Roofing uses blown-in CertainTeed insulation to fill in gaps in joists and create a better fill than laying batts. It lasts for years and won’t clump or degrade.
Insulation prevents the air inside from escaping into your attic and out your roof. It also prevents the hot air in the attic from settling into your home in the summer and causing your air conditioner to work harder than it should.
This is why Garvey Roofing installs roofs for all seasons.
Heat transference is working all year long. During the colder months, it moves from the inside of the home and seeks cooler air on the outside. In the summer, it moves from the outside and seeks cooler air on the inside.
Heat moves through older roofs.
What happens?
UV granules wear off asphalt shingles and tiles. They absorb more of the sun’s rays than they reflect. The summer sun degrades seams. They loosen and let moisture seep in during winter rains.
Meanwhile heat from inside the house is seeping up through the roof and into the atmosphere.
A new roof seals up the roof, including the vents.
