The foothill cities along the 210 freeway have a beautiful view of the mountains and can be gathering places for critters that can impact your roof. Birds making nests and rats using vents like a freeway on-ramp are two issues.
Ever think about water trapped between your underlayment and decking? This can cause heat blisters.
Let’s tackle some odd roofing problems.

Strange roofing problems
Roof rats
For homes near spaces like the Altadena Golf Course, canyons in Monrovia, and other locations with lots of fruit trees and grasses, beware of rats that can access your home through vents.
The rats don’t do much visible damage to the roof itself but they can loosen seams on old shingles and loosen older nails. They can get inside the home and chew wiring. If you have an fan to circulate air in your attic then the wire could get chewed and might not kick on.
One way to prevent rats from getting in the house is to use screens over the vents.
Keep grass cut, fruit trees and ivy trimmed back along fences and use gravel along the home’s perimeter to control grass and weeds.
Birds
They don’t nest on a roof but can nest where they block the flow of gutters and the rainwater can back up in winter.
Bird droppings are acidic and could be a problem for older shingle roofs in some areas of the San Gabriel Valley. If the droppings get too numerous, then power washing your roof is a good idea. They may also peck at shingles.
Another issue for homeowners and commercial buildings using older materials is heat blistering. You know how your skin gets damaged from the sun and can blister?
The same thing can happen with a roof. If water gets trapped between the decking and underlayment, then a blistering effect can occur. This can weaken the contact point where nails are driven in and make the roof more susceptible to leaks in winter.
A Roof for All Seasons
Thomas Garvey of Garvey Roofing repairs and installs roofs for all seasons. His team’s work includes using underlayment, Therma Sheet, that repels much of the sun’s damaging UV rays.
He uses building science in his approach to roofing and knows that the blazing sun in summer can weaken certain parts of the roof and make it more susceptible to rain damage in the winter.
