We rarely have extreme weather like tornadoes, hurricanes, and severe hailstorms. Our weather overall is mild but here’s what you need to know about protecting your home or commercial building.

Roofing challenges
Sun’s UV rays
We’ve got lots of sunshine and that’s a plus but it’s slowly eroding older roofs.
Shingle roofs installed a couple of decades ago become dry and brittle under excessive sunlight. Poorly constructed seams begin to loosen. The granules that are supposed to protect against the sun’s UV rays are degraded.
During winter rains, water seeps into the openings and wash more granules into gutters and onto the ground.
Heat transfers from the roof’s surface, into the attic, and into the house, apartment building, or warehouse.
Garvey Roofing’s solution
The roof’s surface
Properly installed plywood decking, the right underlayment like the latest technology from manufacturer’s like GAF or Therma Sheet, one of the most effective underlayments on the market for reflecting the sun’s most harmful rays.
Ventilation
Thomas Garvey believes strongly in proper air flow to keep newly installed roofs healthy so they last 40 to 50 years or longer.
Low profile vents on the roofs let hot air escape from the attic. Low-cost attic fans that kick on at pre-set temperatures help pull hot air from inside to the outside and blown-in attic insulation provides full coverage to prevent air from transferring into the home or commercial building.
Wind damage
Winds are another culprit hurting older roofs especially for homes near canyons and passes in places like Monrovia, Bradbury, and Pasadena.
Santa Ana winds or gusts before storms will weaken nails, ridge caps, and older shingles that are brittle from the hot summer sun.
Underlayment can also tear and this lets summer heat and winter rains degrade the roof so it’s providing less protection.
In Altadena (and Pacific Palisades) January 6 and 7 are going to be remembered for a long time.
Here’s a news snippet screenshot taken from KCAL news at 11:26 am on January 7 showing where the strongest winds were expected.
Do you remember December 2011 when high winds toppled trees and power lines around the Altadena, Pasadena, and other cities?
You can thank complex wind flows due to the San Gabriel Mountains, as described in a report from NOAA.
