What concerns do you have about your roof?
We’re heading into summer’s highest temperatures so you should know about the benefits of installing a new roof.
Garvey Roofing is a local roofing contractor for Monrovia, Arcadia, and other cities of the San Gabriel Valley and installs roofs for all seasons.
Summer heat weakens an old roof, making leaks more likely in winter rains. If you have shingles that are curling at the edges or tile that’s fading then consider the benefits of installing a new roof.

What to know about a new roof
A roof is a system of individual parts as you can see with these roofing terms:
- Decking—known as plywood’
- Underlayment—Therma Sheet is a leading underlayment that repels water and the sun’s most harmful rays
- Shingles or Tile—this is what we see
- Ventilation—ridge caps, low profile vents, and attic fans keep the air circulating in the attic to reduce heat transfer from the outside to the home’s inside and helps keep temperatures as low as possible
- Attic insulation—this helps keep the interior cool in summer and warm in winter
- Flashing—drip edge and protective flashing around vents and other roof protrusions
Low-slope roofs—many homes in Alhambra, Altadena, and other cities have lower-slope roofs that people refer to as flat roofs. The protective covering is different than that of shingles or tile. Built-up tar was once used with gravel chips on top. Now there are more effective membranes available.
Replace or repair?
Sometimes, when one part gets damaged it can be repaired but depending on your goals as a homeowner or commercial building owner you may be better off installing an entirely new system.

Low slope roof with newer material and a new decking
An example of a repair:
A low-slope area of a roof has puddles after rainstorms and doesn’t drain. The roof feels spongy when walking on it. It may be possible to replace a portion of the old decking and improve drainage.
A new roof can reduce utility bills and make your home look great.
Curb appeal and custom roofs
A roof can enhance a home’s aesthetics with a variety of multi-dimensional shingles and tiles that can last 50 years or longer. If they’re properly installed.
The lifetime shingles and tiles can give a home a unique look.
Thomas Garvey has installed custom roofs. He had a client who wanted a roof to look like the home she grew up in back east.
Thomas brought different materials together and exceeded the client’s expectations.
How you improve your roof can depend on your goals as a homeowner or commercial building owner.
