If you’re thinking about a roof repair or getting a new roof then let’s get to know your roof. It’s not just sitting there like an umbrella over your head.
Your roof is working hard to keep out rain and wind in the winter and the summer’s heat. This helps regulate your home or commercial building’s temperature while protecting your property. A healthy roof should last for decades and the little-talked about parts of a roof help it last its maximum life.
Garvey Roofing is a local roofing contractor in the Monrovia, Arcadia and greater Pasadena area that values craftsmanship.
Thomas Garvey is the owner and he has led the company for more than 30 years and started roofing in the San Gabriel Valley as a teenager.

Little-Known Roofing Terms
Ridge caps
Look for this shingle that’s fitted to the slope of your ridge line. It runs horizontally along the ridge of your house. It keeps out the rain and snow while letting heat rise up out of the attic and escape.
Flashing
Metal flashing protects around the base of protrusions in your roof like vents, chimneys, and helps protect the edges of fascia and eaves. Rainwater droplets follow the metal and can curl underneath so gutters are useful to protect the eaves.
Eaves
These protrusions help channel rain water away from walls but gutters are still useful to direct water away.
Valley
Look where the two sloping roof pitches meet and you’ve found the valley. Rain pours from two different slopes so the valley collects twice as much rainwater as other portions of the roof. Poorly installed roofs often have leaks here or around the flashing and it can often be repaired to prevent further leaks.
Internal drains
Some roofing companies won’t do commercial or residential structures with internal drains due to concerns over liability.
Thomas Garvey of Garvey Roofing handles them and shows how it’s done in this brief video.
Roof parts you don’t see
Decking supports the roof. You’ve likely heard the term but it’s the plywood that’s installed and Thomas Garvey has a technique he calls the triple stack that he saves is as effective as a solar roof while costing about a 1/3 the price.
Ask him about the triple stack and if it applies to your roof.
The underlayment is one of the most critical portions of the roof but you don’t see it. Garvey Roofing uses Therma Sheet to reflect some of the sun’s most damaging UV rays.
Need a roof repair or new installed roof?
Thomas Garvey will check some of these little known areas and let you know. Ridge caps may need replacing due to age and high winds over the years loosening the nailing.
He works with the goals of homeowners and their budgets as much as possible.
